No VarNa Dharma in Purusha Suktam

Dr K.Loganathan, 21-1-11

Dear Friends

I believe that Purusha Suktam(PS) was misunderstand or interpreted wrongly about the genesis of Brahmanah from the face etc and hence the VarNa Dharma that became entrenched almost in the whole Sk literature of subsequent periods. By recovering the original Tamil Base , I understand the slokas quite differently. The relevant ones are slokas 12, 13 and 14.

I suggest that 12 raises questions about the face chest legs and so forth of the creatures generated emerge from Purusha. The in sloka 13 it is said that the FACE emerged from brilliant part of Purusha and so forth. Such a theory of creation is continued in Sloka 14 where now the question shifts to the creation of the mind , the senses and so forth.

It appears to me nowhere in the Sukta, there is the VarNa Dharma being enunciated but only the creation of different types of creatures and their external and internal anatomical stuctures.

The whole Suktam is available at:

yath purusham vyathtathu: / katithaa vyakalpayan/
mukam kimasya kaubaahuu/ kaavuuru paathaa- vucyathee//

When the devas in the shape of PraNa created by willing the Virad Purusha , in what different shapes they created all? What became the FACE of this Purusha? Who are said to be His arms? His thighs and His feet?

Let us recover the base Tamil of this Sloka.

yath purusham vyathathu: That Purusha who (on His own accord) showed Himself

yath: Ta yanta : which . Ta. yaa: the interrogative: who what where etc.
vyathathu = miyatha-athu : that part (athu) that surfaced to the top ( miyatha).
Ta. mi, mii : the space above. Ta. meel : above

Note: this meaning is consistent with the understanding of Purusha as One who has shown only part of Himself / See

The Purusa (or the Primeval Being) has a thousand heads, a thousand eyes and a thousand feet. He has enveloped this world from all sides and has (even) transcended it by ten angulas or inches.

katithaa vyakalpayan : Purusha brought forth the various kinds life forms

katithaa < kati-thu-a ; ki-a-ti> kati: to live(ti) in the world (ki-a) katithaa: the various kinds of living forms there is the world?

vyakalpayan = mi-ya-kaal-bi-an : (Purusha) established( kaal-bi-an) as above in the world

mukam kimasya kaubaahuu : How came the face and chest (of the creatures) from Him?

Mukam . Su. mus : to project out, to move out; musen; beaked creatures, birds etc. Ta,. mukam, muunjci muukku etc.

Mukam: that part that is projecting out.

Kimasya : kim-asya> sim asya: how their (the creatures) (face) come to be there (si-im> sim)

Kau-baahu: ki-av-baahu: Su ab, Ta. av: they , those. Baahu : Ta paaku, paakam :chest

kaavuuru paathaa -vucyathee : how it is said there came to be the legs and feet?

Kaa-v-uuru : Ta. uuru: thighs. Su. u, ur Ta, uuru: to crawl, to move etc . Ta. uuru: the lrgs , that which helps to move.

Paathaa : Su. pa, paa Ta, paay; to jump forwards, leap etc.

Thus the recovered form of sloka 1.12

And the meaning is :

When the Purusha emerged and showed part of Himself He also established the various kinds of life forms on the earth. Now these life forms or creatures- What is said about how they came to have faces, arms( or chest) legs and feet ?

brahmaNoo asya mukam aasiit/ baahuu rajanya kruta/
uuru tatasya yat vaicya:/ pathbyaam cuuthroo ajaayata://

From the FACE of Purusha emerged the Brahmanahs . From His arms were created the warrior kings. Whatevr His thighs became the Vaisyas, i.e. the trading class. From the FEET came the sudra class of people.

Now for the recovery of the original base Tamil of this sloka. Note that sloka 1.12 shoaws that now the inquirty is into how the various organs of the creatures like face arms thighs feet and later the heart eyes and so forth are derived from the Primordial Purusha.

brahmaNoo asya mukam aasiit : From His part that illuminates emerged the faces

brahmaNoo asya : From his (asya) part that illuminates

bramaNaa = bara-maaNu-a : Su. ba-ra Ta. paru- : intense light etc Ta.Paruti: the sun Ta. maN, maaL: clear light, MaaNaRivu: clear understanding. Thus bara-maaNu-a : that light the illuminates the creatures.

mukam aasiit : the faces (of al the creatures) emerged.

Aasiit = aa-sii-tu : Su.a Ta. aa: to become. Su. si. sii: to become as there , as existent

baahuu rajanya kruta: the shoulders and
arms were created from Purusha's radiant parts.

Rajanya = raja-ni-ya : The ‘ni” is a personal infix and which is the same as in Sumerian but which as suffix has the genitive sense. See a-ni-za: on your own wings/power. Raja-ni-ya: from Purusha's radiant (raja) parts

uuru tatasya yat vaicya: the parts for movements emerged from His hidden parts

Note: uuru could be the genitals, those parts concerned with ‘uru', that of shaping re-creating etc.

vaicya = mai-si-a : those in the dark, hidden concealed etc. Su. mi, gi Ta. mai: dark, black, hidden

pathbyaam cuuthroo ajaayata: From the parts of Purusha that is concerned with expulsion emerged the buttocks

cuuthroo = cuuttu- uru-u : the rounded parts, the buttocks. See Su. u-sudu: the highest terminal, Ta. suudu: the top part, Ta, suudu: to crown. Ta, cuuttL the buttocks

pathbyaam = path-bi-a-am (< paayccu-bi-a-aam) : Ta. paay: to leap , jump. Ta. pii: excreta

Thus the recovered form of 1.13

ஊரு தாதஸ்ய யாது மைசிய/ பாய்துபி-அ-ஆம் சூத்துரு-உ அஜாயதே//

The recovered original meaning is:

The faces of all creatures( that contain the brain parts) emerged from Illuminating parts of Purusha. The arms and shoulders ( of strength) came from His parts of (spear-like) radiant light. The genitals thighs and so forth from His concealed (private) parts. And the organs for excretion and expulsion from His parts that are concerned with discharges.
