It appears as though you are also shaken out of yourself, not realising your prowess.’ It was Jambavan who brought Hanuman into action, infused him with all information that he had forgotten about himself and induced him to undertake the colossal task that he so readily accepted. Angada reminds that incident very subtly to Jambavan. ‘neeyum anjinai pOlum.’ Looks like you are also given to cowardice. Observe how cautiously Angada uses his words. The junior most, speaking to the senior most and trying to bring the latter to reason!

 The Poet depicts Angada handling each and every point raised by Jambavan and others, very politely, satisfactorily and convincingly. ‘Do you think that deserting at this moment would take us anywhere? And even if it is granted that we may escape death for some time now, we know that it cannot be avoided and death is certain. ‘thunjumaaru andri vaazha oNNumO?’ Will we be able to live forever and ever? We have to face death at one time or the other. ‘naaL mEl thOndrin, nanju vaai ittaalanna amudhu andro?’ If the time for death has not yet arrived, even if you take poison, it would act as elixir, and you know that fact!

Such being so, how do you let your mind to go astray like this and lose your confidence in him? ‘meeL alar vElai pattadhu uNarndhilai pOlum mElOi.’ You the wise one, you do not seem to realise what happened to the ocean when we attempted to construct the bridge across it to reach Lanka. How can you lose heart? How can you feel that Rama and Lakshmana would not be able to handle these ogres?

 Observe that each and every argument of Angada is well supplemented with a polite remark, an admiring phrase or a sincere praise. How can it fail to make its mark?
 Jambavan felt a little ashamed. ‘I have seen most valiant of ogres in my days’, he responded, as is wont of all seniors. ‘maaliyaik kaNdEn pinnai maaliyavaanaik kaNdEn. Kaala nEmiyaik kaNdEn iraNiyan thanayum kaNdEn.’ I have seen great ogres like Mali, Maliyavan, Kala Nemi, Iraniyan et al, in my long life and have participated in many a war against them. ‘aala maa vidamum kaNdEn.’ I stood witness when the poison of all poisons – aalakaalam – emerged from the ocean. ‘madhuvinai anusanOdum vElayai kalakkak kaNdEn.’ I have seen the great Madhu and Kaidaba challenging Lord Vishnu. ‘ivarkku uLa midukkum uNdO?’ But believe me, not a single one of them can match just any one of these army of demons that have come marching on us now in the battlefield.

 Though the original plan was for the moola bala sainya to attack only Rama and Lakshmana, the very arrival of so many ogres, many times the size of Kumbakarna struck terror everywhere. The entire Vanara army ran helter-skelter. Many of them even tried to reach back to the bridge to pass over to the main land. ‘putrin nindru val aravu inam purappada, itradhu em vali ena viraindhu iri tharum eli pOl’ Like mice running on seeing hordes of snakes coming out of their holes, the Vanara army did not stand in the battlefield that day.
 Only three stood by the side of Rama and Lakshmana, says the Poet. ‘aryin vEndhanum,’ The king of monkeys – Sugriva, ‘anumanum,’ Hanuman and ‘angadhan avanum,’ Angada ‘piriyakitrilar iraivanai nindranar,’ did not move from the side of Rama. The word ‘piriyakitrilar,’ can be interpreted either as ‘did not go away,’ or ‘could not go away.’ The terror that ruled the place could be seen by the employment of a word so deliberately in a way that it can be interpreted in more than one way, in respect of the three that stood by the side of Rama. Of course, the Poet does not mean to present a tainted picture of these three warriors. The Poet captures the mood of the Vanara army by the onslaught of the moola bala sainya by the skilful employment of the word ‘piriyakitrilar.’
 Vibishana apprised Rama of the nature and strength of the moola bala sainya. Both anger and a smile adorned his face, says the Poet. ‘kEtta aNNalum muruvalum seetramum kiLara,’ A smile, along with trace of anger, rippled across his face. ‘kaatukindranan kaaNudhi oru kaNaththu.’ Just look on. I will show what I am capable of in a trice, he said. And turning to Angada, he asked, ‘Ottin mErkoNda thaanayai bayam thudaiththu meeti kol?’ ‘Would you be able to wipe the army, that has taken to running, clean of its fear and bring it back?’ That goes to prove the immense confidence and trust that Rama placed in Angada. Remember. There were two other veterans by his side – Sugriva and Hanuman and despite that he chose to entrust the job to Angada.

Even that could not make them listen. ‘ondrum kEtkilam endradhu ak kurakku inam.’ ‘No. We are not prepared to listen to anything’ said the army of monkeys. The panic that was let loose by the arrival of moola bala sainya was so immense and intense. It was left to Angada to stop them first; make them listen and to collect them in one whole. Where were you on those occasions, Ravana? What were you doing? Why did you not rush to that spot to avenge for what happened? ‘inich cheyyum aaNmai undo?’ What kind of bravery is still left in you to defend yourself against the arrows of Sri Rama?

 He ordered four of his soldiers to get hold of Angada. Angada allowed himself to be caught by them, says Valmiki. “In order to exhibit his strength before the host of ogres on that occasion, the resolute and valiant Angada (son of Tara) voluntarily allowed himself to be seized (by the ogres). Taking (with him) the (four) ogres who clung to him like (so many) birds, the aforesaid Angada then leapt on to (the roof of) the palace, which stood like a mountain. Violently shaken by the impetuosity of his bound, all the (four) ogres fell to the ground while Ravana stood gazing.”
 Angada then trampled on the decorative minar-like top piece of the palace and broke it into pieces while Ravana stood down below, dazed and mesmerized.

 Imagine the kind of shock that would have given Ravana. He is reminded of the way he was slighted by a monkey – the clan of whom he was moments ago speaking so lightly – in his very own Court, in the presence of all his ministers and commanders-in-chief. That too, in a very cool and casual manner. Can there be a better way of deflating the bloated ego of this Ravana? He called the bridge over the ocean ‘a structure over a puddle’ just moments ago. He is rendered speechless for a few moments.
 There was no need for long speeches of who is better and who is stronger and who is going to be the winner. Just a casual dropping of a vital piece of information at the right time and you render the ‘matchless’ ruler of the world tongue-tied! But Ravana could not be underestimated. He had his own cards under his sleeves.

 How easy will it be for anyone to get reconciled to this situation?
 Implicit obedience. That is the first impression that anyone gets of Angada. It takes a great deal of maturity to understand the peculiar circumstances that we saw in our last instalment. It is not easy for anyone placed in the situation of Angada to react in the way he did. He had a father to be mourned; a mother to be taken care of; a life that is presenting a dark picture now, to contemplate; a stepfather who was responsible for the death of his father, to be obeyed.

 As we mentioned earlier, Angada led the team that went south. They could not find Sita anywhere and there was no clue as to where she could be found or should she be looked for, though Angada bifurcated the group into subgroups to scour specific areas. And he gives specific instruction to all of them to assemble in a particular place, after a specified number of days. ‘theLLu neer ulagu elaam therindhu thEdi neer’ After looking for her in all the (assigned) places ‘eLLa arum mayendhirathu emmil koodum’ come and join us in Mahendra parvatha. Organising and administrative skills.
 But when they assembled as planned, without any result, the first one to feel frustrated was Angada. When all the other teams had no difficulty in returning empty-handed, Angada could not think of doing so. Let’s see the reasons why he feels frustrated and even goes to the extent of deciding not to return and to give up his life by undertaking a fast unto death, in detail.
